UNIVERSAL EPIC UNIVERSE GRAND OPENING INVITATION IDEATION

My creative team was tasked with developing multiple concepts for the grand opening event at Universal Epic Universe. Guests would receive the invitation that would also have an interactive component. My team developed 6 concepts that were narrowed to 2. Those chosen 2 designs were taken to prototype.

CONCEPT 1 | ASTROLABE

An astrolabe is an ancient astronomical instrument used to determine the positions of celestial objects, time, and latitude. It was a handheld model of the universe, used for timekeeping, astronomy, and navigation, particularly during long voyages. We drew from the celestial design and theming throughout the park to develop our early sketches. Our vision was for the astrolabe to tie closely to the Epic Universe backstory.

We collaborated with vendors to explore a variety of materials and to engineer multiple working astrolabes with moving dial layers as well as the packaging and paper invitation.

CONCEPT 2 | CUT PAPER SHADOWBOX

The concept began as layered cut paper shadow box with the ability to pop up and light up upon opening. We left open the possibility of simplifying it to an intricate accordion fold design. Behind a cutout of the chronos, each layer was to feature a portal to a different world.

We shifted to a design that focused on Celestial Park with the Chronos tower at it’s center. Due to budget constraints, the shadowbox became an accordion fold card that would arrive in a sleeve, with an invitation that would sit on top. Both pieces would arrive in a glassine envelope.
